Mark Deakes

Director, Optical & Authentication Technologies

Dr Mark Deakes has many years’ experience working within the security print industry, having spent 15 years at De La Rue in various roles including Process and Technology Development Manager for De La Rue Holographics and Technical Sales Manager for Solutions. During his time at De La Rue, Mark built up significant knowledge and experience in security print products and processes for tax stamps, currency, ID and brand protection. He was also involved in the production and development of over 30 hologram products, including scratch-off holograms and co-led the development of the optically variable magnetic stripe (OVMS).

Whilst at De La Rue Mark also worked in the tax stamp, brand and authentication sectors where he sold and bid on international tax stamp contracts and was responsible for the company’s technical specifications for international tenders and factory implementation. He also spent time in holographic production where he was heavily involved in improving aspects of surface relief production processes, including embossing, coating and demetallisation.

Mark has both a technical (BSc and PhD in Chemistry) and a business education (MBA).

In 2015 Mark joined Reconnaissance as Director of Optical and Authentication Technologies at Reconnaissance, Mark is responsible for the company’s activities in holography, authentication, security printing, brand protection and supply chain security. He is Conference Director for Optical Document Security™, Digital Document Security™ and the Holography Conference™, editor of both the Holography News® and Authentication News® industry newsletters, and the General Secretary of the International Hologram Manufacturers Association.

Mark also heads up the company’s activities in consulting where he has carried out a number of client consultancy projects that include : start-ups, university spin-outs, private equity groups, security component suppliers and multi-national security print and authentication providers.
